They spoke Norman French for years after the invasion of Ireland. That's indisputable. What superior term are you suggesting I should use even in the 12th century?

So you get to react hostilely to me and then refuse to explain why I merit that hostility? I didn't do a single bloody thing to you, you just seem intent on insulting my intelligence here for reasons I can't ken.

You don't get to play the victim here. This was an antiracist post which you have taken over. There is extensive literature on 1167-71 and the invitation to the English, which you can find online. Gillingham, Veach, Flanagan, Lydon, Duffy, etc etc

Your hostility is completely unwarranted and you can't be bothered to back up your claims after you make them. This kind of behavior speaks incredibly ill about you. Your first two sentences show your perception is distorted and hostile despite me doing nothing to you.

Neither of you should be doing this in Dr MRO's mentions, but also, this is Stephen's expertise and what he writes on, so I can appreciate that he bristles at something that he has spoken at length about.

to that point, Stephen, I don't think Gearoid was trying to derail a discussion necessarily, so everyone can just take a step back and realise that no one here is really disagreeing outside of not being up to date on terminology.

Stephen, not everyone is aware of your research and the extent to which "Norman" is largely ahistorical. Gearoid, consider also this is something that Stephen feels strongly about. Everyone can just relax, because people are still learning and are speaking in good faith here.

Nothing about how I was just treated involves "good faith". But fuck it. I'm done. I've had enough. The last thing I needed was to be reminded my academic dreams are more or less dead.

No one was shutting down your academic dreams. Stephen feels strongly about his work and has received a lot of pushback on it. You were unaware of that, so okay, but I think this is largely a problem of miscommunication and tone.

But fine, I thought I'd intervene but if no one wants to just take a step back from this and calm down...okay. Just don't fight in other people's mentions.
