Wait are we talking about modern use of the word? Because I'm talking about 6th century. And if I'm not allowed to call the broad culture of the Germanic communities on the east coast of England in the 6th century "Anglo Saxon" what am I supposed to call it?

I just gave you a reference that says explicitly that it was never used in the 6th century. Scholars are generally referring to the people in the period as "early English." The reference page in that link has numerous alternatives.

Thank you! I wish that the ISSEME “about Anglo-Saxon” page worked tho—now it just redirects to the home page. Also, still as the ISAS banner on the left. As a person who questions the periodization and separation around 1066, I do like the “early English” descriptor.

No worries. You've made a really good point abt periodization (& associated problems) which is also something the field is grappling with. It's worth discussing further for sure. I have an article coming out on it in 2021, so I hope that gives us something further to talk abt.

I look forward to it. Will you be at (virtual) ICMS next year?

Not sure. A panel I was on that was due to discuss the term 'Anglo-Saxon' was cancelled this year & not forwarded on to next. I'm not slated to present, but might pop in as a viewer.

That’s sad. I’m glad that ICMS has been expanding focal areas outside of Europe, but, still, BIPOC coverage within the study of Europe has a long way to go in conference representation.

Sorry people throw medium articles at me all the time so I dropped the ball and didn't read it. Early English seems just as compressed and unhelpful as AS. For me it goes back to Gramsci, this just doesn't seem like a fight that helps the cause. But if I'm wrong I'll scrub it.

Dr MRO has been fighting white supremacists on here about this shit for ages now, and considering that her work about how inaccurate it is has drawn literal white supremacists and neo-nazis to attack her, maybe siding with those dudes isn't the best look.

Also why stick with someone from 80 years ago when the research has moved on...and on...and on several times over.

I'm not saying remain non threatening to white supremacists though. My god, does this all need to be so high noon? You know I'm a Portland BLM dude right? But look, I've got a toddler to look after and it is clear that /nothing/ here is productive.
