it comes in waves, but i'm starting to really miss little Normal Time things, like drinking with friends or in-person academic conferences

coffee shops are my big thing, and also going to the pub for afternoon pints with the lads. . . . don't miss conferences though.

I like conferences when I can get a good group of people to chill with. I don't like awkwardly standing in reception halls when I haven't made any friends yet, or being politely ignored by people from ivy league schools...

listening to 30 min papers in a cramped room where it's super awkward to duck out if I need to is my special type of hell, so being able to watch online is vastly superior. Only thing I really miss about conferences is hanging out with people I like, as you say. Haha.

I was very lucky to have the first conference panels I was on organized by a habitual duck-outer, which made me feel more comfortable with my own discomfort

It was very nice. She was, to my eyes, a very put-together, professional person, so seeing her ok the practice of ducking out when you need a moment was big for me
