12) A v long rant that fails to recognise that (1) quotes in sci journalism are answers to qs. the journalist asks (2) the quotes are a perfect example of how common sexist views about the role of women are in the past (3) archaeological evidencehttps://twitter.com/ArchyFantasies/status/1324885504173740042?s=20 …

🕹️ 🗿 👽 🛸 ArchyFantasies ⚰️ 👻 ☠️ 🦑 @ArchyFantasiesSince I slammed this article for dressing this hunter in *paank*, I figured I should at least read it, because it's supposed to be a good article. So I did. Aaannndddd...my dudes, I'm not impressed. A thread: https://twitter.com/PopSci/status/1324411240916131846 …Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 40 likesShow this thread -

14) Also an explanation here, and the very good question of why we don't see more archaeological illustrations of hunter-gatherers in different shades of red and pink since natural red dye usually shows up reddish-pink on hidehttps://twitter.com/kristinromey/status/1324468159294984192?s=20 …

15) You might be wondering why this is even important, and
@tinysapien has this great thread TLDR -"accuracy over stereotypes" -considering pink inherently girly is rooted in sexism -trashing a paper based solely on an image is v unprofessionalhttps://twitter.com/tinysapien/status/1324999784747446272?s=20 …Ayushi Nayak, Knight of Queen Shahmir added,

16) Basically, it is highly problematic for mostly white archaeologists to fixate on the choice of a pink outfit in an image and to make that a highly talked about topic on a public platform. Like can you please do better because there are far more imp. discussions to be hadpic.twitter.com/SU373vwaU5

17) For example 1) read the paper with the range of methods used in it by
@ForagerLab (proteomics, stable isotopes, 14C dating, meta analysis, rock art analysis) 2) apparent lack of traditional knowledge 3) highlighting the views of BIPOC on this paper and MOST IMPORTANTLYpic.twitter.com/qeQXbURDMI1 reply 0 retweets 45 likesShow this thread -
18) engaging with these views that clearly demonstrate the gap between your perception of how "woke" archaeology and anthropology is AND the public perception of descendant communities, the "researched", BIPOC of how othering, alienating, dismissive the discipline has been to us

19) Of course if the image showed the hunter in pink BECAUSE they are female that would be sexist and would warrant annoyance, but it seems like this outrage is more for internet clout, social capital and not a considered response.

20) What's worse is that the (mostly) white archaeologists don't seem to have engaged w the public responses to the paper. I'm sure this wasn't your intention, but on public profiles with 1000s of followers & high engagement, there are far more important conversations to be had.pic.twitter.com/aRqf7BSpty
