That it is far too easy for it to be weaponized as a tool for white supremacy, and that the elitist and racist nature of academia itself fuels it. Racists use medieval history because of how it has been framed for so long.

There are a lot of people trying to fight against that narrative, my BIPOC colleagues, my queer colleagues, my disabled colleagues, and many others, but the field itself is so entrenched...it’s hard. And those racist narratives make their way to the public consciousness.

And some double down and make racist YT videos and others just hear it and uncritically accept it and parrot it. This applies to a lot of misconceptions about medieval history too. Either we get called killjoys or cultural marxists.
