What exactly is this money going to then? More details are needed here, because this is massively expensive for an online conference, when other online conferences operate at much less. Transparency would be a good thing right now.https://twitter.com/IMC_Leeds/status/1318477582355103745 …
I think that if a university can’t afford to subsidize one of their largest conferences during a pandemic where finances are even tighter for precarious PhDs and ECRs who can’t expense online conferences to their own institutions then maybe they shouldn’t hold the conference.

I don't know. I've often had to pass on Leeds & other conferences for economic reasons, but I'm not sure how my research would have benefited from conference being cancelled & other scholars being unable to share their work. They usually offer bursaries, they might do this again
-
I've never qualified for a bursary myself, since I was too old when penury hit, but I know other people have. Might that be something to investigate?

There's a huge distinction between the University's ability and its willingness to subsidize it. The humanities are massively devalued in the UK and the IMC is certainly not the university's priority.
-
But I'm not sure what purpose cancelling 2021 would serve, except to threaten the jobs of the small but dedicated team who facilitate the IMC.
