It's actually kind of complicated -- they're depicted as converts but who did it really badly. His dad Geza/Deuvix is a Christian but still worships his previous gods. According to Brun of Querfurt, that was all the fault of his mom though (who has like three names)

I’ll have to go back and check but it definitely glosses over a lot in his life or casts it in a different perspective.
