It's so incredibly depressing to see ECRs and small indy presses, both barely hanging on due to the pandemic, attacking *each other*, rather than the dystopian systems of 21st C academia which doesn't value the labour of either.

To be honest, I don't even think they are attacking each other; their friends are. But, yes, sad and unnecessary.

The initial tweet was very rude, and the OP kept going on even after apologizing, refusing to stop all the people coming in to attack the grad student.

Acting like this is some sort of both side issues completely ignores the power dynamics within the interaction. No matter who they work for, an employed person in an alt ac job has no right to be snide to a grad student for asking for a PDF.

And when the friends of the editor have rude subtweets complaining about the concept of open access or are members of a Facebook group of racist and sexist medievalists one of whom has harassed said grad student before, that is unacceptable and not at all a level playing field.

This is really not my fight, not least since I know (and like) both participant personally. Chris has acknowledged that small indy publishers have a right to be concerned about sales, just as Caroline has acknowledged that grad students aren't always in a position to pay.

Caroline also said to a disabled independent researcher that he just shouldn’t get books, if he cannot afford them. If she is concerned, then she is a hypocrite because she never said a word to tenured folks doing the same thing as Chris.

Chris is not responsible for B&B’s wages or salaries. He never would have bought the book anyway, he needed it because libraries are closed or have limited access, plus it’s a pandemic. If he went to the library then he’d still be using a copy that someone else purchased.

If she is worried about getting paid in these times then she should be talking to universities about this, not singling our a grad student. What is so hard to understand about that? Honestly.

As I said, this is not my fight. Both Chris and Caroline have explicitly acknowledged that there is another side. If you see it differently, that's fair enough.

Do you really think Caroline saying that people sharing PDFs killing publishing after a Chris just asked for a PDF is honestly even possibly on the same level. She didn’t have to weigh in or even say anything to him.
