Yeah the elitism, classism and power dynamics of this is sickening. You just tweeted a long thread to defend Caroline who has "don't buy books" as a response to ppl and you've just realized that a grad student was simply asking for a book to find a reference? Give me a break.

You've missed part of the thread, I think? I have not just realised this at all.

I got into this thread because I feel very grateful to Caroline, and because I recognise how much work she puts in to supporting people.

And who said we aren't grateful for Caroline? No one is stopping you from going on your TL and praising whoever you want. Do you think these grad students need this extra stress? You are in their house. Chris was the OP.

I did go on my timeline to praise her? My initial response to this issue was to say how much I owed her.

Then why are you *HERE*? You had to make the point to the grad students who have been attacked for the past 2 days?

Because I think we need to tackle this issue with universities, not publishers. Why are you here? What do you think we should do?

Why? Both are operating on profit logic. Why are you so enamored with one and not the other? Your position does not seem logically clear to me.

Universities limit access to make more money. Publishers charge high prices to make more money. Both are motivated by the same fundamental issue; profit in a system that values that over other forms of value.

Whatever your feelings, the two are not the same. Boydell are a small, employee-trust-owned publisher who use their profits to pay dividends to their staff. £24k profit last yr ≠ Gordon Gecko. What uni is owned by its employees?

And yet once again, literally none of this falls onto grad students. Boydell has been around for 40 years and Caroline gets paid. Man, I'd sure love to get paid. Must be nice to have a job from where you can preach to grad students at.
