You're making an argument where one doesn't exist. No one is saying universities shouldn't provide access, and I told Caroline that if she is concerned about ppl relying on PDFs then she should advocate to universities for access.

But we can't wait for all of our universities to get access to every book we need, because it's not just me and Chris, it's who knows how many thousands of people over thousands of universities.

Also, it is very difficult to revisit work a few months later and add in all the stuff that's missing. If I need to check one page? Yeah sorry, I'm not waiting months for the library to maybe get a book I asked for.

PDFs have saved a great deal of my research and have saved me a lot of headaches. If I can get the physical books or get online access through the library I do. PDFs are a last resort. But they got me through. I will not apologize for that nor should anyone else.

And I'm not sure if you've noticed but myself and Chris and Dr MRO put pressure on terrible academic systems all the time. I have asked for books and journals to be brought in. But it takes awhile, and demand right now is much higher.

So acting like we don't think universities shouldn't give access when we have been saying they should but it isn't as easy as that, not when it's dozens of books and journals from just one person is arguing in bad faith.

And I think that you were more concerned with your friend Caroline and defending her than sticking with precarious academics. There was no comradeship here. None. Zero. And I'll say it again, everyone who has been dogpiling Chris should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm being frank because this is gone beyond ridiculous. Reply or not later Lucy, but I'm thoroughly upset, appalled, and angry to see what I've seen over the past two days.

This isn't okay. This is 100% not okay that any of this happened to Chris, who did not deserve this bullshit in his mentions. Idk if he's okay, but if he wasn't I wouldn't blame him because I certainly wouldn't be. You've all just decided that it's okay to preach to grad students

in some effort to "educate" or "inform" when in actuality all it was for was to obfuscate and move goalpoasts and invent arguments where there were none because some people think we are just deserving of being kicked at.

If any one of you cared about this in reality then you'd have been saying it months ago to the tenured profs who said they had folders of PDFs to give out. We are not your punching bags, and we are not responsible for the capitalist structures that pervade academia.

Chris asked for a PDF and somehow this turned into us, the people without jobs, having to support academic publishing but also apparently our lack of petitioning universities for access. Excuse me, but I was saying from the beginning of lockdown we should always have access.

So please do not come to me as if I am not on here nearly every day as someone doing a PhD with no stipend holding her institution to account with stuff going down during the pandemic.
