Then why are you *HERE*? You had to make the point to the grad students who have been attacked for the past 2 days?

Because I think we need to tackle this issue with universities, not publishers. Why are you here? What do you think we should do?

I'm here to tell you personally to back the fuck off of grad students because I've spent 2 days of my life having to explain to ppl that not everyone can afford to buy books.

Yes, and we all know we can't afford books. But aside from that?

Aside from what? Go read the rest of the tweets. That's not on me to spoon feed you. There's 2 days worth of them now. I wasn't the one doubling down and subtweeting grad students who don't have funds or access to materials they need.

I'm sorry, I think I am going to leave it now. I've read quite a lot of the tweets, but my basic point is that I wish grad students and precariat academics were granted proper access by universities. If you feel otherwise, fine. But that's my feeling here.

Literally no one feels otherwise? The problem is we DON'T have access and we need it immediately, especially since we're under deadline. By all means, if you can offer a solution that would be timely for people who need to submit things on a deadline, that would be great.

You're making an argument where one doesn't exist. No one is saying universities shouldn't provide access, and I told Caroline that if she is concerned about ppl relying on PDFs then she should advocate to universities for access.

But we can't wait for all of our universities to get access to every book we need, because it's not just me and Chris, it's who knows how many thousands of people over thousands of universities.

Also, it is very difficult to revisit work a few months later and add in all the stuff that's missing. If I need to check one page? Yeah sorry, I'm not waiting months for the library to maybe get a book I asked for.

PDFs have saved a great deal of my research and have saved me a lot of headaches. If I can get the physical books or get online access through the library I do. PDFs are a last resort. But they got me through. I will not apologize for that nor should anyone else.

And I'm not sure if you've noticed but myself and Chris and Dr MRO put pressure on terrible academic systems all the time. I have asked for books and journals to be brought in. But it takes awhile, and demand right now is much higher.

So acting like we don't think universities shouldn't give access when we have been saying they should but it isn't as easy as that, not when it's dozens of books and journals from just one person is arguing in bad faith.
