I can see that. I didn't personally read it as you being chastised so much as just as reminder of the structures we all rely on.

Why even say it though? She had no reason to pick Chris and say that. He's not a child, and we all understand that people deserve to be compensated for labour. But I'm not sure that you're getting that Chris has had to deal with over a day's worth of harassment over this.

But so has Caroline? And she works hard.

What part of a power dynamics are you not getting here. Chris is a barely employed grad student and Caroline is an editor of a publishing company. What does that even have to do with Chris's original tweet? I've asked this before but who told Caroline to come &change the subject?

Again and again I have apologised to Chris.

I get that, Caroline, this response was for
@LucyAllenFWR who clearly isn't seeing the dynamics here. Yes, you should be paid, yes you are doing important work. Tell your colleagues here jumping in as though they need to defend you that that isn't necessary. When Chris tweeted1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

his request, he didn't need it reframed w/ an immediate reply. And let's be real here, he used a hashtag that 1000s of ppl use & this is also available on othr social media networks. Ppl coming for him, where are they when other scholars have done the same? Choose your battles.

Ok, I do see that point. But, as I say, I understood her comment in the same way I understood the same sort of reply when I first heard it - just an explanation.

A grad student saying "can someone send me X?" did not a reply by a publisher saying they need to make $. Also, why waste time (mis/re)interpreting a tweet reply that never needed to be? This didn't need to be reframed & an impoverished grad student ain't the target.

But where is the harm in the publisher saying that? It's not an issue, surely?

It's absolutely an issue when, once again, the tweet was rude and aimed at a grad student who is trying to finish his work in a pandemic. She could well have said this to any of the tenured people offering PDFs.

Again, I didn't read it as rude. I get that you did. But I didn't.

Well it wasn't levelled at you, and since you seem to know Caroline on some level then I suspect you wouldn't want to see it as rude either. But it was.
