I hope Chris is ok. I will bow out now.

Yeah the elitism, classism and power dynamics of this is sickening. You just tweeted a long thread to defend Caroline who has "don't buy books" as a response to ppl and you've just realized that a grad student was simply asking for a book to find a reference? Give me a break.

You've missed part of the thread, I think? I have not just realised this at all.

I got into this thread because I feel very grateful to Caroline, and because I recognise how much work she puts in to supporting people.

I think our universities should be giving us proper access. If they did, I don't think this situation would arise.

Except we can't tag in every university here and say, give us access. Libraries too are struggling with requests. Yes, the overarching problem is access. But that isn't going to do anything for Chris right now.

Why not tag the library? They will try to get a book, I bet you. And if enough of us make a fuss, universities might actually realise this is their problem. They are asking us to research as professionals, but they're expecting us to keep on working with google books.

Then you do that for yourself. But in my experience, while libraries can and will try to accommodate requests not all will take them from grad students and they probably won't do it from twitter. It can take weeks or months, demand is likely high. We don't all have the time.

Yes, ok, but then when are things going to change?

I don't know Lucy, but putting the burden on precarious people isn't going to get you very far. So once again, if this bothers you so much, feel free to contact universities yourself.

Or the publishers can contact the universities. Why not ask Caroline to contact universities to ensure everyone has equal access to all B&B books? Ah yes, I already told her to do that I think yesterday. That didn't go anywhere evidently.
