I mean, really directly, she will be losing income, right?

If I were able to access a library, I'd be requesting multiple B&B books bought - far more than I can afford to buy. But I'm not doing that, because I can't go to my local academic library.

There must be many of us who can't ask for books to be bought. I would think purchases are shrinking quite a bit. I don't think we should feel guilty or anything, but we surely can't feel a publisher owes us, because we can't get to the library.

You realize that we are obligated to produce theses still in a pandemic? Our committees probably won't be that understanding if we say, well sorry we didn't have access to the book so I couldn't cite it.

Yes, it's the same with me, too. And indeed all of academia.

I didn't have institutional access for much of the time when I was writing my book. It was really tough. That was the time when I learned why asking people for book PDFS is was quite a loaded request.

Well, it is common regardless, but this is a pandemic and access is even more curtailed. So I think everyone can just relax, because Chris, myself, and every other person who relies on PDFs are adults who understand that labour should be compensated.

I would love to buy every book I could, and to have perennial library access. But library access doesn't help me when I can't get my disabled self to a library a mile away and the library doesn't have access to an ebook.

I know. I'd also love to have access, not to be disabled, not to be miles from libraries (mine are in a different country from where I live), not to be caring for a toddler ... but, I also get that it's our universities that should be stepping in here.

We need better support, institutionally, to make sure all of us can access books. It shouldn't rely on us asking for pirate PDFs and getting into arguments with publishers who are also frightened about survival.

Caroline has a job. I think she and everyone else she works for should be paid fairly for their work. But we don't have jobs. Not really. We don't have support. And yeah, it is going to come down to PDFs right now because libraries either won't or can't afford what we need.
