I have seen loads of academics, tenured, PhDs, ECRs, etc., asking for articles and books throughout the pandemic, which is still happening by the way. But I have only seen vitriol being sent to those precariously employed or grad students needing to write theses. #medievaltwitter

I have needed to rely on the kindness of people here because it is hard to get in touch with people, I have a disability, and it’s a PANDEMIC. I do not have a stipend for my PhD or income for books. I have bought them when I could but I often cannot.

It’s one thing to invest in one €50 book. But my bibliography has hundreds of citations, and I didn’t have access to them. I still don’t have easy access because it’s a PANDEMIC.

So to those of you who were liking tweets that were attacking a grad student for asking for an ebook yesterday and today, shame on you. How dare you act like we’re in the wrong.

And I’ve seen some decrying open access. This is one of the reasons academia is seen as elitist, BECAUSE IT IS. Again, shame on you.

I’ve half a mind to call out liking the tweets going after the grad student. I hope you see this and feel bad, because you should. If you want to help then offer to purchase them the book, if you are so worried about no one making money. #medievaltwitter
