I have needed to rely on the kindness of people here because it is hard to get in touch with people, I have a disability, and it’s a PANDEMIC. I do not have a stipend for my PhD or income for books. I have bought them when I could but I often cannot. #medievaltwitter

It’s one thing to invest in one €50 book. But my bibliography has hundreds of citations, and I didn’t have access to them. I still don’t have easy access because it’s a PANDEMIC.

So to those of you who were liking tweets that were attacking a grad student for asking for an ebook yesterday and today, shame on you. How dare you act like we’re in the wrong.

And I’ve seen some decrying open access. This is one of the reasons academia is seen as elitist, BECAUSE IT IS. Again, shame on you.

I’ve half a mind to call out liking the tweets going after the grad student. I hope you see this and feel bad, because you should. If you want to help then offer to purchase them the book, if you are so worried about no one making money.

there’s also something in the particular selection of people liking those tweets. it’s almost as if this isn’t really about a pdf

If ANY grad student needs something they just can't find, send them to me. Seriously. I don't even care if there's not a pandemic on. I've been in that boat and I'll help. If I can get it at the BL, I'll scan it for them. It may take a couple of weeks but I'll get it.
-
seconded! I have online access, and piles of pdfs.

In fairness, many authors will oblige, but there’s the time factor. If you get a request during leave or via certain platforms like ResearchGate, you may not reply quickly and find folk accusing you of being a w*nker. Also, requests for work you haven’t written, pre-ebook etc.
-
Okay. That isn’t what I’m talking about. I am fully aware that authors will provide PDFs, but when they don’t or can’t, and we can’t get to a library, then we use other avenues
