If I was able to access a physical library I could get a copy. But there is a pandemic, so I cannot. Either way, I'm not buying the book, so the publisher isn't getting any of my lucrative graduate stipend. I don't understand why I should feel bad for the publisher?

I do appreciate your predicament. But if a publisher can't make money to pay its costs from sales revenue, a publisher won't last long.

Again -- no matter what I do here, I'm not paying for the book. The only difference is that I cannot go to a physical library because there is a bit of a plague on.

My options right now are 1) get an ebook from a friend 2) don't cite the book. Those are my options. Unless you'd like to tell me how much of my graduate stipend I should be setting aside for paying for academic books because I can't go to the library?

Stealing from another academic and their publisher is not okay under any circumstances

It's not stealing, it's sharing, which is cool and fun and makes everybody happy (except you I guess)

Sharing is when you ask the person who wrote it for use of their work. Going behind their back to ask other people to pass it on is something else. I'm happy to share my own work...

Well sometimes they don’t have it, which is something I have encountered. Also, are you aware of the concept of libraries and scanning chapters and articles for classes? Do you think that every time that happens the author is told?

Considering keeping a list of all the employed and tenured academics giving Chris grief over this in a PANDEMIC.

Seriously, unless you are one of the people who have apologized you should be ashamed of your behaviour. We’re struggling enough as is without being shamed by people who have money and authority.

You know how hard it is to contact people sometimes? Not everyone has contact details online if they are retired or outside academia. Others are shy. And given the shockingly rude behaviour from some here it would warn me off contacting anyone.

Yes, I one case it took a hand written letter on quality paper to get a response. It’s called making an effort
