Also thanks to the Chinese hack of the Office of Personnel Management, the Chinese govt has my incredibly invasive background investigations. MIGHT AS WELL LET ANCESTRY HAVE SOME DNA.

Also Ancestry did help us find a cousinhttps://twitter.com/NeolithicSheep/status/967527689451171840?s=19 …

So hey you know those Ancestry DNA tests? Hilariously, we've found another one of my great-uncle's out of wedlock children because I did one and then my mom did one.

Anyway here's the original report: 50% western Europe, 29% Ireland, 7% Great Britain, 6% Iberian Peninsula, 4% Finland and NW Russia, 2% Italy/Greece, <1% each for Scandinavia and Ashkenazi Jewish.pic.twitter.com/neJxHs8BtJ

      Most recently: 53% England & NW Europe, 22% Scotland, 14% Wales, 7% "Germanic Europe", 2% Norway, 2% Ireland.pic.twitter.com/o7JrFrOe0L

Notably I do not have any on paper evidence for "Germanic Europe" or Norway, all the ancestors mom and I have traced back to Europe come from Great Britain or Ireland.

Almost guaranteed the Germanic Europe stuff is likely from admixture from the Continent to GB and Ireland, although to be honest I am unsure as to how they are classifying the locations. Genetics are tricky.

Population bottlenecks in times of plague will also tend to make even moreso of a mix, but with invasions and trade and just moving around it is inevitable.

Yeah and I do not regard it as particularly accurate except insofar as it corroborates the historical record we've been able to find. Where there's a discrepancy, it's gonna be in the DNA results.

Yeah. The other problem is that the DNA just matches modern populations rather than the populations generations back. So it creates problems when we apply it to the past. Genealogies are better IMO, despite problems of alterations.

Also you'd think Ancestry could, I dunno, cross reference to the genealogies although then you get into problems where people don't know they're adopted etc etc.

Yep. It’s hard with kids born out of wedlock too. Lots I don’t know about part of my family because of that.
