This is such a great point by @ISASaxonists -- so many of our research tools as medievalists (languages, paleography) take such a long time and so much effort to learn. What if we put that effort instead into fighting white supremacy and remaking our field?https://twitter.com/DanielleGAllor/status/1303731532830576641 …

Not "don't learn languages" (because I know someone somewhere will deliberately misread), but allocate our time and effort differently to do the work that, as
@ISASaxonists says, might *actually* save people.1 reply 1 retweet 7 likesShow this thread -
Replying to @DanielleGAllor @ISASaxonists
you are massively overestimating the power medievalists have over modern racial discourse. imo a better approach would be pushing for greater engagement with the public. but somebody still has to do all that pesky ivory tower work.

case in point: i'm no medievalist of britain or europe, but in my part of the world "historical" tv shows and politicians do infinitely more damage to public's understanding than whatever we write or teach in the classrooms. it's not a problem we can solve in journals.

No one is saying the problem will be solved in journals, but academic work frequently (more often than not) perpetuates the erasure. But it’s important and necessary to do public facing work and engage with the public and other scholars about this.

Like those doing the work speak out against media and politicians all the time, so it would be appreciated that you do some research before acting like we just try to enact change through journals. Dr Rambaran-Olm has dedicated a lot of her time to public engagement.

And idk if you watched the video but it is very clear from it that she means how we engage publicly AND scholarly.

Not sure why you wouldn't want more context before replying, since I don't think either Dr MRO or @DanielleGAllor were making the points you were responding to.
