So look here's the thing about fashion and shit, and I will warn you in advance a bunch of you are gonna get grumpy But as noted in replies there is this recent movement toward fashion calling back to peasant/poverty aesthetics.https://twitter.com/NeolithicSheep/status/1302386149428789248 …

Looking at this Instagram ad and all I can think is that it's for people who long to dress like consumptive Victorian orphans. pic.twitter.com/Rwc6whCr7r

Eg cottagecore and this Victorian workhouse orphan look. The romanticisation of poverty as an aesthetic is gross, y'all. Also fucking cottagecore is eliding the realities of rural life, eg or hospitals are closing IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC in favor of a soft focus fantasy.

It is also fucking gross. These things are gross like Marie Antoinette building herself an actual fucking village so she and her aristocrat friends could dress up like their dream of peasants and play at being poor.

I am having a lot of trouble phrasing it because hey, if you're comfy in big loose clothes I want you to have that, but those dingy greys and patterns are a deliberate aesthetic choice to play pretend that you are a Victorian child living in squalor and it's creepy and unpleasant

Like... Actual Victorian children did not want that. They wanted clothes that looked clean and were clean and had *colors* cause I hate to tell people this but we've had fucking fabric dyes forever.

Choosing to celebrate conditions of misery and squalor is fucking creepy, it makes my goddamned skin crawl. I don't care if you want big loose dresses but if you tell me that yes, you want to play at looking like a 10 year old being forced to work 16 hours a day? WTF.
