I know that we as medieval historians will use literally any scrap of evidence we can get our hands on, but I am thoroughly perturbed about the use of Ptolemy's map of Ireland to discuss early medieval Ireland.

But I saw an article from 1986 (maybe '84) that tried to link the Brigantes on the map to the Ui Brigte and...I know that Brigit and Brigantes may be linked etymologically but it is so unlikely that the Ui Brigte are a derivative from the Brigantes in the 2nd c.

But the same paper linked "brecc" and "bric" to Brigit so...yeah.

The argument being that "brecc" meaning speckled wasn't a good epithet for a king so the placenames and population groups with Brecc or variants MUST be from Brigit/Brigantia.
