This is a very important issue, and Leverhulme is actually one of the better funders in this regard. Yeah, they counted from when you started rather than when you ended your PhD, and assumed that b/c the UK only funds 3 years of PhD work, PhDs only ever take 3 years....

Yep, it's crazy. I know of a few UK people who actually managed to finish in 3, but it really relies on *everything* going right and no major problems on route. Most ppl take 3.5 or 4 anyway are super-pressured in writing up due to funding issues

Yeah, it seems far more likely for people to need the extra year these days. Funding bodies need to catch up.
