This is a very important issue, and Leverhulme is actually one of the better funders in this regard. Yep, it's crazy. I know of a few UK people who actually managed to finish in 3, but it really relies on *everything* going right and no major problems on route. Most ppl take 3.5 or 4 anyway are super-pressured in writing up due to funding issues

Yeah, it seems far more likely for people to need the extra year these days. Funding bodies need to catch up.
