I’m having this absurd argument with someone on Facebook about kids going back to school. She is insisting that it a parent’s duty to keep their kids home. I think that online schooling is best but there isn’t much a single parent or low income family can do?

Like if everyone could keep their kids home to keep them and everyone else safe then they probably would. But online schooling needs good wifi, a decent computer, supervision of some kind for technical issues

Meaning you need to be at home. But working from home isn’t an option for everyone or if it is then chances are you need a computer too.

But if you’re a single parent or two parents working a front line job, without any family to help, wtf are you supposed to do?

There's no way we could keep Elisabeth off nursery, and we're neither single parents nor front line workers nor hard up.

(And I wrote most of my book without fulltime childcare, so I am quite used to working with a baby/toddler to care for at the same time.)

We can't afford not to work; her nursery would fold if children didn't go (not a problem for schools, I know).

But the biggest thing is it would be catastrophically bad for her. It's absolutely terrifying seeing the effect of isolation on children. It *is* such a healthcare issue.

The issue is that this is in my home city and the reopening plans do not allow for social distancing, rely on the idea that kids don’t get COVID or spread it (both untrue), and places the onus on teachers to clean/manage sanitation and this is when education took a funding cut,

It's awful. :-( It's the same situation here.
