    1. Tweeting Historians‏ @Tweetistorian 24 Aug 2020

Hi everyone! I'm Erik Wade, & I'll be hosting @Tweetistorian this week! I'm a medievalist specializing in English literature who focuses on the global origins of ideas about sex & race in medieval England. I normally tweet from @erik_kaars #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/V1HOK9HlJt

Medieval manuscript illustrations shows two couples with light or white skin being tormented by naked demons with dark skin. One couple is two men, one lying atop the other, embracing and leaning in to kiss him. Behind them is a second couple, of two women, standing, embracing, and kissing, with one woman giving her partner an affectionate chin chuck with one hand.

I received my PhD from Rutgers University, and I currently teach at the Universität-Bonn. As @sasanianshah said, I am working on a book called "Race in Early Medieval England" with Dr. Rambaran-Olm, under contract with Cambridge U P.

I've published on blackface & Islamophobia in medieval drama, Byzantine influences on early medieval England, theological ideas about women's sexuality, how bestiality and sex between men first were compared in English theology, medieval wisdom literature, and inclusive pedagogy.

I've changed the banner to this image from British Library manuscript Egerton 943 (f. 109v), showing the Lustful in hell, as encountered by Dante. Figures of various genders kiss in the flames, including what seem to be same-sex pairs.pic.twitter.com/GoLbglTbwQ

Medieval manuscript illustration shows three figures obseving an enormous fiery pit, in which nude couples kiss amid the flames, including what appears to be several same-sex couples.

I've changed the profile pic for the week to this image from Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Codex Vindobonensis 2554. It's one of the few medieval European images of same-sex desire, showing a male couple and a female couple in hell.pic.twitter.com/FoOyFiAYEh

The same medieval image from the first tweet, of two same-sex couples being tormented by demons

[TW: racism] Note that the demons--as is common in medieval Christian art from Europe--are portrayed as dark or black-skinned, naked, and have bestial features. As I will discuss this week, images of demons often drew on tropes of Black people & dehumanized them.pic.twitter.com/nPq6v1Oi0E

A close up of the same medieval image from the first tweet, of two same-sex couples being tormented by demons. The close-up focuses on the demons, who are naked, with human bodies but heads with animal features. One has a head somewhat like a dog.

One of the central arguments of my work is that medieval ideas of race and sexuality were intertwined. Anti-Blackness has a very long history in European texts, and the demonization and dehumanization of Black people continues today, giving fuel to anti-Black violence

      Replying to @selflibrarian

What a useless reply. He isn't a doomer because he acknowledges racism and anti-Blackness and violence against Black people.
