I saw some posts that were IE only and some that were EU only. Those were public jobs. I also saw a secondary teacher post, but it had 'no visas' on it. Maybe you could get the job on a graduate scheme visa (1G) and then get sponsored after you're employed?

I mean that’s the plan, but I wouldn’t want to search forever for a job on the grad scheme work visa only to then have to look for another that would sponsor me. Plus I’m apprehensive about that grad scheme visa, apparently a lot of employers will not hire on it.

Are you going to play the academic job roulette as well, or just focus on 'real-world' jobs?

Yeah I want to have an academic job, but I need something that I can live on until I get that while I do postdoc apps and publications.

In that case, I'd start planning post doc apps now, since they usually have hard, once per year deadlines and take a fair bit of work. Like Stephen said, happy to offer advice and read over stuff, as someone who's suffered through it.

I can’t even think about them when I’m trying to get the thesis done. I still have loads to write so I can’t really focus on doing postdoc apps. I know they have deadlines and are long and arduous, which is why I can’t really think about them now too much.

That's totally understandable, and finishing the thesis should be your #1 priority. It just sucks that you got hit w/ covid, since usually submitting in Sept gives you ~2 months to recover and work on postdocs, but this whole year will be so out of whack

Yeah it really sucks. But I suspect a lot of people are in similar positions. I haven’t even had time to think about postdoc projects much.

Finding a (good) postdoc project is actually really hard and time-consuming and I don't think enough people appreciate it. I basically took a month off my thesis at the end of 3rd year to do it (procrastination *finally* paying off); even then needed lots more work post PhD

Replying to @NiallOSuill @AdmiralHip and
The system is so relentless and brutal, it's no surprise that a 6+ month pandemic is going to screw everything up for so many people.
