In terms of what people actually do: anecdotally, civil service and other public sector jobs are by far the most popular (mainly b/c they don't see a PhD and think 'overqualified', so it's easier to get them). After that, general white-collar business management/analysis
Yeah it really sucks. But I suspect a lot of people are in similar positions. I haven’t even had time to think about postdoc projects much.

Finding a (good) postdoc project is actually really hard and time-consuming and I don't think enough people appreciate it. I basically took a month off my thesis at the end of 3rd year to do it (procrastination *finally* paying off); even then needed lots more work post PhD
