Civil service would be great, too bad I think I need to be an Irish citizen for that. Not sure about other public sector jobs. And yeah I know generally white collar jobs but I wonder if any businesses in particular like to hire PhDs I guess.

Although civil service needs citizenship (EU rather than Irish, I think, tho still not applicable in your case!), I think most other public sector stuff (local gov, semi-state etc.) only need a work permit. Private sector v much depends on individual company/hiring manager afaik

Ah I thought it had to be only Irish citizens. But yeah still not applicable for me. Private sector I have experience in from when I lived in Canada so I know how to navigate that to a degree.

Problem w/ private sector in Ire is that, except for big multinationals + shortage areas (tech, finance), it largely operates still on word of mouth, connections and networks, even at entry level. In many cases, as Yan said, you're kinda just shooting in the dark

I know getting a job isn’t gonna be easy no matter what but man, even thinking about getting a non-academic job is stressful

I found the only thing more soul-destroying than endless academic job apps was endless non-academic job apps. It's just a horrible process and there's no good way around it, I'm afraid.

I’ll have a few months yet to figure it out since I’ve got my extension but I just want a job that isn’t working at a Starbucks or something.

I was told by several people to apply at g**gle. They sponsor visas.

I heard that too. I am curious about that.
