Is there a good resource on alt-ac jobs in Ireland for history PhDs?

If there is, I've never seen it. I suspect there's not, b/c just like the ac market, the sector is way too small and niche for something like that to have been created. Happy to share the limited amount I've learned while knocking on the door though.

Unless I massively misunderstood, alt ac shouldn’t be a niche thing, it just means jobs outside academia. I’m curious what other history PhDs (and other AHSS PhDs I guess) did if they didn’t go into academia.

Ah ok, sorry yeah I think that's the misunderstanding. I thought alt-ac = non-academic but still connected/related to your subject area. So for history, they're mostly in heritage, education, museums, libraries, tourism etc.

In terms of what people actually do: anecdotally, civil service and other public sector jobs are by far the most popular (mainly b/c they don't see a PhD and think 'overqualified', so it's easier to get them). After that, general white-collar business management/analysis

Civil service would be great, too bad I think I need to be an Irish citizen for that. Not sure about other public sector jobs. And yeah I know generally white collar jobs but I wonder if any businesses in particular like to hire PhDs I guess.

Although civil service needs citizenship (EU rather than Irish, I think, tho still not applicable in your case!), I think most other public sector stuff (local gov, semi-state etc.) only need a work permit. Private sector v much depends on individual company/hiring manager afaik

Ah I thought it had to be only Irish citizens. But yeah still not applicable for me. Private sector I have experience in from when I lived in Canada so I know how to navigate that to a degree.

Honestly, from my own experience (pre-Covid), your best bet is going through http://publicjobs.ie every week (sort by date added) and you'll find good policy/admin jobs there that won't mark you down for your PhD - it's where I got the most success (not a job, but interviews)

The problem is finding a job that will sponsor a work visa though. Apparently not all will.
