The claim is, apparently, that because they didn’t have academic parents it meant they didn’t know how to navigate academia period, namely, things like citing your undergrad dissertation or asking questions, if I recall.

I mean, I had 0% guidance from mine because their undergrad experiences were SO different than mine (and not just era/cultural/etc). But again, they both have degrees and therefore, I’m clearly not first gen. Seeing ppl try to argue otherwise is just….ugh.

Me too, but I knew other people and asked them. Or I just figured it out myself because I read books.

True. Grad school was just kind of a “oh, well, that makes sense as a thing to do” (lol @ past me) and I just did all of it on my own. First round I applied to places without contacting people, paid too many fees, & got 0 offers. Then learned that grad =/= undergrad application.

Round two was a little better, but still, a lot to learn. Reached out to some old profs for guidance after again 0% success. Decided round 3 was the last round and just did so much research and reaching out to folks.

But: I’m STILL NOT FIRST GEN

This is the thing, academia is by design (not in a good way) obscure and difficult to navigate. It should be transparent. But people with academic parents don’t have a leg up, because not only are a lot of things different now but chances are they went to a different institution

And in a different field. Things operate differently across departments. I see that now in my own experience. It’s frustrating but there is nothing you can do to prepare.

Otherwise, I think a lot of it comes down to not bothering to research what you’re putting 4-8 years of your life into.

Also goes without saying, imo, that grad school is VERY different from North America (and even between Canada and the US and Mexico I imagine) and Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.

Having navigated educational systems now in three countries — yes.
