There was a scholar claiming this a few months back and yeah, sorry, you aren’t disadvantaged because your parents don’t have PhDs. This is a subtweet and the scholar is in the replies to the original tweet on this. https://twitter.com/kataplexis/status/1294539573482131458 …

Yeah, so many feelings about this. My dad has a BSN bc the military sent him to school & my mom was a non-trad pt student, but still has a BA. So, while neither of them knows the system (one ex: I struggled majorly with how to apply for financial aid) I’m def not first-gen.

My mom and brothers went through some level of higher ed, and stopped at BAs/diplomas. And yeah, grad school is a mess of figuring stuff out. But claiming first gen academic is grasping at wanting to be disadvantaged and it is OF COURSE coming from white folks.

And all it does is centre the conversation around them and obfuscate what first gen college student means.

Yeah. Also worth noting that when I had specifically confronted this person about this a few months back they just doubled down. And they keep doing so it looks like.

The claim is, apparently, that because they didn’t have academic parents it meant they didn’t know how to navigate academia period, namely, things like citing your undergrad dissertation or asking questions, if I recall.

There were other things that they didn’t know about, apparently. I think that things should be explained but it frustrates me because many of these problems seem like...idk, a common sense thing. I feel like a lot of the stuff that is being “withheld” in this case is less 1/

that and more of, well why not ask? Or something that would have been encountered through osmosis and conversation, reading online about what a PhD entails, etc.

I don’t understand applying for grad school and not looking up certain things. Why not do the research into how things work? A lot of the problems are out there, explained.
