A number of PhD students have said that they are reluctant to enter the library because people studying there are not wearing face coverings and, at times, not social distancing http://www.universitytimes.ie/2020/08/phd-students-fear-entering-library-due-to-lack-of-face-coverings/ …

Glad to hear that masks have been made mandatory. They should have been before but at least they are now. It would have been nice to get some advice from college on this though. We’ve been worrying for awhile about this.

The teaching plans still do not advocate for 100% mask wearing. I don’t know how this won’t be bad. Face shields aren’t mask substitutes.

If a class of, say, 10 students and a TA can maintain 2 m distance, but don’t wear masks, they are speaking in a room for about an hour where droplets can spread and circulate.

Then they all leave. What if they need to use the toilet after class? Is toilet access being limited? The toilets are very small, with bad ventilation.

      The hallways are narrow too.

And then what if they have to go to a class where social distancing is 1 m?Where do they put on a mask? What if a student doesn’t have one? Who enforces the rules?

What if someone who was ill breathes over the room and whoever teaches a class and someone without a mask comes into that room? We know that it’s airborne now.

So now you have a bunch of people spreading it through the hallways etc.

And if masks are mandatory in the library where people won’t be crowded together (probably) why not classrooms? It’s totally backwards.

Same with shops. Shops are limiting how many are inside and masks are mandatory now. Classrooms should absolutely have mandatory masks. All indoor spaces should.
