This reminds me of every time I talk about my research I get biblical scholars and late medieval historians who study like, Richard II constantly asking me what I think about their fields.https://twitter.com/AdmiralHip/status/1292408253427716098 …
And this is something I find a bit frustrating when I give papers, like I’ve spent 5 years doing specific research and at this point it has been a decade since I did a general late medieval class.

I haven’t had time to do outside reading into anything. Everything I know is very centred on my geographical and chronological parameters.

But I always feel like I’m a fucking ignoramus when I get questions about the sanctity of kings in the 12th century and my answers are always, I don’t know.

Maybe this is being ungenerous but whenever I get a question that is ultimately not that relevant to my thesis and it is just a long description of sources and events that I don’t know, it feels like the asker is showing off and wants me to comment on THEIR work.

If the question was, have you examined any parallels with this? Then okay. But don’t stand up and monologue about Henry II at me and then ask if I think there is any similarities. I have no idea. Clearly YOU think there are similarities though.

I always feel like these questions are designed as a gotcha to the person giving the talk. And maybe they don’t intend to do that but I hate being asked questions where my answer can ONLY be I don’t know.
