Unless this is a joke, do not do this. Yes, there is a gender imbalance between men &women that men don't experience. If men legitimately want to learn about mansplaining after being told by women that this is a thing read up on it. Start with Angela Davis' Women, Race, Class. https://twitter.com/KFDuggan/status/1291759039702085637 …

Totally agree. One question though: given that white, cis, straight men are the masters of mansplaining, do you think that we can call their condescending “well, actually” comments to men of colour, transgender men, and gay men mansplaining ?

I feel like I’ve had experiences where white cisgender straight men have tried to tell me what Vikings are all about and it’s come across as pretty... mansplainy.... but I don’t want to co-opt a term that’s not for me !

I think that's a really important point. I think there is still a power imbalance with cis-het men talking down to men they believe are "feminized." But the term is different, as

I totally forgot about straightsplaining as a term - I’ve also heard whitesplaining. I suppose that mansplaining is related to, and often comorbid with, these other terms— they’re all discourses generated by a toxic white masculinity.

Agreed. I don't think straightplaining is used as much, cause I had forgotten about it too. There is a perceived power imbalance tied to discrimination in straightsplaining (like cis het men *think* they're above queer men), but I suppose the same can work for some cis-het women.

I think you’re right... I think it would be really interesting to see if these discursive modes also appear in medieval literature, and if so, with whom!

I mean, it’s not mansplaining, I think? It seems like homophobia mixed with the general sexist idea that femininity means someone is less intelligent. Which obviously gets wrapped up in racist ideas about certain POC men being effeminate or trans men not being “real men”

I worry about using the term “mansplaining” for queer men’s experiences, bc queer men mansplain to women all the time. We’re totally complicit in sexism and should be careful about co-opting terminology used to describe it.
