Yeah if there is one thing I remember about fencing was that if you weren’t breathing hard after a few minutes then you were doing it wrong.
I did it for about 8 years-ish and especially in sabre, it's extremely aerobic. I would finish most sessions with most of my gear at least lightly soaked, even the lamé. The only things that come close for me, aerobically, are track cycling and cyclocross.
Yeah when I did epee for a bit I sweat loads, and the layers didn't help. It was tough, and like you say very acrobatic. Sabre I can see being even more so.
