Tourists at @tcddublin will not be required to prove they have quarantined the mandatory 14 days, nor are they required to wear face masks on campus. Tourists can visit beginning 10 August, which is earlier than PhDs will have unfettered access.

Eh, I think it's a little harsh, honestly. The mask thing is ridiculous, sure (everywhere should be requiring it), but the idea that TCD (or anyone other than central government) should vet tourists on completing quarantine is bonkers and unworkable

They should at the very least have to wear masks, and there have been restaurants etc now refusing entry to people who can’t prove they isolated. I don’t think it’s that absurd, if they can show their passports with a stamp it’s proof enough.

Agree on masks. I've only heard of restaurants refusing people who admitted they havn't isolated, which is fair enough - proof is much harder. Any one of 400 million EU citizens can come in without a passport stamp, not to mention the Brits....

And that's before you start trying to distinguish tourist from resident; do you force anyone non-white or with a non-Irish accent to produce their visa or evidence of a home address? It quickly becomes unworkable.

If people are being required to isolate from certain countries then I assume they are being provided some kind of document to prove this, otherwise it’s unworkable by the government too.

There's no document being provided, all self-isolation on entry to the country is effectively voluntary (you need to provide address and contact details, I think) - it's been criticised as unworkable/not working since May

Well I’m not sure what the solution is to the tourist problem if they aren’t wearing masks otherwise. At the very least though, TCD’s plans for the autumn and reopening do not seem to be putting safety ahead of all other things.

Do we actually know anything about their plans for the autumn though? As far as I was aware, all that was announced was that all lectures would be online + start dates. I agree it's not looking good for compulsory masks based on library/B of Kells, but is there any more detail?

Tutorials, seminars, and labs will be in person when possible. The GSU and SU have told me a few times that masks will be made mandatory but most of the advice coming from them doesn’t talk about masks.

I heard that TCD is still hung up on sanitizing surfaces and such. But when I asked the GSU VP about masks in the library right now, she said they should be mandatory but has since deleted her tweets.

Again, that all sounds (largely) like rumours and leaks (albeit maybe from reliable sources) rather than confirmed actions. The words "where possible" are doing an awful lot of heavy lifting and give college basically unlimited wiggle room, one way or the other.

I can't really say much because some of what I was told was said in private, but it's not rumour so much as policies not made public yet. Regardless, TCD should be pushing masks, and the GSU and SU need to be as well.
