I often get frustrated when I see assertions that passages or sections from the Irish genealogies are early but there isn't really an explanation. In the phrase "Ferta na rRig" from TCD H.2.7, O Corrain says that it's an early form.

I assume the rr in rRig is germination, and that would be the reason since I was under the impression that was a marker of early Old Irish, but my grasp of the grammar of OIr is pretty poor to be honest. Not sure if
@ChronHib or@eDIL_Dictionary have any thoughts on this1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
The manuscript itself has, according to O Corrain and I believe also Thurneysen, a fair amount of early material. But as a non-linguist it is hard to justify this to readers.

The rr is nasalisation in this case, caused by the genitive plural article (in)na. I don't understand Ó Corráin's statement - there is nothing particularly early (or late for that matter) in Ferta na rRíg. It's one of those forms virtually undatable.

Thanks, I thought it was strange. It was in his revision of Hogan’s Onomasticon. The passage it’s contained in seems to be from the late eighth century, and a bunch of other early material (pre-syncope according to Ó Corráin). But that’s all I can find.

Just happen to have eHogan open on my computer. It says "on older form" - that's actually quite non-committal and means nothing in particular
It may be originally from Hogan? Usually Ó Corráin's stuff is between *...* In any case, the passage looks like good Old Irish.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

I checked Hogan, I don’t think he says it’s older himself, but I will check again. Thanks for the info! I was well prepared to say it was an early form, since I can’t tell the difference myself.

Oh I just checked Hogan, he does say an older form. Haha, I should have checked this first I guess.
