This BethAnn McLaughlin/sciencing_bi shit is bonkers (if you're confused then search sciencing_bi or look through my RTs from yesterday). I'm not in STEM but the tweets made it into my TL that a prof at ASU had passed away from COVID.

I have to say that it certainly spurred my fears about teaching in the fall (in person). I'm still very afraid, but now I am upset and angry that what this ended up being was some absurd hoax.

I do not know who all was behind sciencing_bi but it is clear the account did not follow the life of a real person.

However, it seems pretty clear that BethAnn McLaughlin, who I didn't know about until only a few days ago, has a history of sidelining WOC in MeTooSTEM, and many people resigned from the org because of her terrible racist and bullying behaviour.

This sciencing_bi seemed to attack those who spoke out against BethAnn as well, targeting young WOC online.

Anyway, the whole thing is sick. It is STEM's version of Gay Girl in Damascus, as
@dorothyk98 said yesterday.2 replies 0 retweets 6 likesShow this thread -
This was like Livejournal era sockpuppetry. And for those who think that it couldn't be a hoax because the account in question was open too long or it seems to be too much energy, let me tell you that people who pull this shit are able to commit to the bit for a long time.

But it seems obvious to me that this whole thing was cocked up in an attempt to show that universities shouldn't reopen while also demonstrating that BethAnn was loved and respected by a Hopi anthropologist to fend off any accusations of racism.

When I read her tweet that sciencing_bi, ostensibly a bisexual Hopi anthropologist, had a Hopi tattoo and wanted BethAnn to get a matching one, even though BethAnn thought herself it might not be okay, was such a weird fucking statement to me.

Frankly it made me suspicious right away, but I didn't really interrogate that until later when I decided to look more into this woman's death and see if ASU released a statement about it when I saw people asking questions and not getting any definitive answers.
