My mom was told when she got tested was that it’s a neurological thing where the sound doesn’t convert properly to signals in the brain, but that it’s something that a lot of people have. For me, it manifests also when I listen to things on my headphones.

Meaning that when I watch stuff on my headphones or listen to music I am unable to hear anything in the background for some reason, like if someone was calling my name. Even on really low volume.
