I can't believe I have to keep saying this but the Irish aren't a race. Quit saying that there are racial slurs against the Irish. There are ethnic slurs but not RACIAL slurs. Quit trying to peddle some "the whites are victims of racism" schtick now.pic.twitter.com/GvPKPBAkyF

That “Irish slave” myth that floats around FB every 6 months is about one of the most insidious mythologies out there...

Yeah but Irish people believing they are a different race now is mind-boggling. I'm sure that they can be othered and discriminated against in Britain but it's not racial, so I don't know why anyone in their right mind would argue that.

Could it be rooted in the fact the English treated them as if they were an (inferior) race in the medieval period?

No. These people got mad at a few of us last year for asking for equity in our field and now they just look for anything to score points.

Americans who believe they are Irish are disturbingly right wing. I’m sick of arguing with these people, who will rant about *us* kicking the Brits out of NI while being unable to see that *they* are the oppressors in the US. I try to stamp out the Irish slave myth when I see it.

Yes, very good point, and v good to set the record straight concerning the myth. That's important work.

the myth was apparently started by African slaves according to this Uk Gov website https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/irish-indentured-labour-in-the-caribbean/ …pic.twitter.com/mXPmvXh41E

I think the historicity of that is suspect. @Limerick1914 has written loads on the Irish slave myth and it’s roots and perpetuation.
