Need to vent. I engaged with the lead singer of my favourite band when I was a kid (Billy Lunn from The Subways) who has been a mutual on twitter for a few years. He had RT'd a graphic and upsetting video of a sick piglet from PETA and said people need to see it. 1/

I said, politely, that PETA was a racist, sexist org and that I didn't think guilt was a good motivator for change in industrial farming standards in an unequal capitalist society. I said veganism isn't accessible for everyone and individual guilt can't make widespread change. 2/

I expected discussion and meaningful engagement with what I'd said but he got very defensive and said I should feel guilty, even when I explained I can't go vegan due to my disability and disordered eating. He got mad at me, compared animal welfare to BLM, then unfollowed. 3/

He was mad that I'd asserted PETA was bad but failed to provide 'evidence'. The onus isn't on me to provide that, it would have been upsetting to do so, but PETA is one of the most roundly-criticised charities, and this is well known and well documented through a quick google. 4/

Then he quote-tweeted me from his verified account to his 10k followers, then tweeted another 3 times about me. I'd tried to be polite and kept trying to understand his position and find common ground. But I deserve a pile-on anyway, apparently, merely for daring to criticise. 5/

Then, about 20 mins after the argument, he deleted all his tweets relating to me or PETA. No apology, just a quick spring clean of his account so all his bad behaviour was gone without a trace. I have no way to prove he said any of it. 6/

Leftist men on the internet seem great and then the moment you try to engage with them critically they lash out with all the force of their privilege. Even when you make your critique palatable, and come from a place of respect or admiration. The toxic masculinity emerges. 7/
