“selling dismembered manuscript pages is bad”, says eager buyer of dismembered manuscript pages. 🙄pic.twitter.com/BYkaxy2whU

tweet with images of dismembered manuscript pages, text: “Since first acquiring this leaf, I've bought on auction 4 other leaves from this same manuscript, all with fascinating, mainly secular drawings. It seems likely the original codex was - sadly and infuriatingly - dismembered by a dealer, probably sometime in the last 20 years.”

seems to me that if there weren’t customers for this trade, there wouldn’t be a trade ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

and anyone responding to that “they’re better off in my hands than someone else’s, because I’m an expert” can get in the sea, imho. if you’re an expert, you *should* know better.

“I didn’t buy them from the guy with the knife” (but from a his fence) sure is a hill to choose

PS not tagging because judging from their tweets evidently nothing will convince them that they bear responsibility, but I'm not sure why so many here are following the incunabula account, and particularly not why some prominent codicologists are regularly full of praise for itpic.twitter.com/VqNXOc8bER

"Maybe dealers wouldn’t dismember books if people didn’t buy single leaves?"; @Incunabula replies: "A fair point, but there's no easy answer. Single leaves survive due to many circumstances, not just through dismembering for resale. At the time I bought the first leaf, I had no idea there were others. And I didn't buy any of them from the dealer I now suspect broke up the book."

yeah like I suspected, tagging them in really would be ineffective. it's amazing how predictable.
