it still feels incredibly tedious. And before anyone suggests citation software, that ship has sailed and it would take longer to learn how that works and get it to fit the style I need (plus the problems they often present when you convert to PDFs) 2/

so I am doing them manually and it is frustrating. What is also frustrating is the lack of guidance on this. I don't blame my supervisors because I think they assumed that we were taught this but as a Canadian student used to Chicago style 3/

then moving to Ireland where I was not informed as to what citation style was needed (IHS), which is for the record not well-documented and has no guidance for bibliographies at all, it is incredibly frustrating to find out last year that I need to change my citation style 4/

I am of the opinion that if it is consistent then it shouldn't be a problem, but if they want a certain style then it should be provided by the department. My department at my undergrad uni had a citation guide. Histories and humanities at TCD need the same for postgrads. 5/

I do know that undergrads get one but the last time I checked it wasn't that thorough. It's fine for undergrads who are writing papers that are 2k words ish and they use very few sources. But I wasn't an undergrad here. We didn't get any guidance in the MPhil 6/

and my supervisor for the MPhil didn't say anything about my footnotes or citation style so I assumed that it was fine and kept using what I was using for the PhD. No comments were made on it for my reviews for year 1 or 2. 7/

So now having to go through my footnotes to change them and not knowing what to do for my bibliography is stressful. I'm having to crowdsource what the other PhDs are doing as well and I get a variety of answers from them. 8/

This really sucks. They should provide a style guide. You might go get a recent diss and reverse-engineer the style from theirs. Contact a reference librarian for help. They often know/have resources you can't find on your own. Also no one talks to them so they're grateful 🤭

Yeah the issue is that my supervisor I think has some certain requirements that others don’t because there is still some flexibility with citation. And as much as I respect my librarians that are swamped with stuff atm with getting the library up and running right now.

Regardless, your supervisor needs to make expectations clear and help you with that. And I'm sure the librarians would be happy to help. I'm bothering people about stuff of far less importance and they've all been super friendly! I'm sure they'd love to help you.

I’ve been informed that it’s up to my supervisor and me to decide so I doubt the librarians can do much for me. I also found an email from my sup from ages ago that I forgot about and it did have some guidelines. But dept wide there is no standard apparently.

Ah. Okay, as long as you have the guidelines! Definitely references/footnotes suck. Very tedious. I'd do mine when I didn't have the energy to do "real" work. It was tedious, but sorta mindless so it was something to work on when I didn't feel up to actual writing.

Yeah, I have several pages to get through after my 90 page chapter I just finished. Lol.
