Thesis: I’m a piece of shit who wants to punch down on kids these days saying they don’t know anything while simultaneously knowing shit all about the early medieval period.pic.twitter.com/eoUuwOBq8a

Quite apart from the general stupidity of his statement, I think sample size and socioeconomic status might also have skewed the average somewhat. I'm guessing something around 0.001% of 18 year olds would have been students and all would have been tutored from the age of 2

Well I mean he thinks like 5% of the population were students (massive number and likely wrong, but I want to see where he’s pulling those numbers out of his ass). But even comparing an educated monk to me aged 18, I can guarantee what I knew was more and also more accurate.

Like okay I didn’t know Latin or Greek (yet) but I still knew three languages, had an understanding of algebra, astronomy, and how to read music because I learned it in school. And I knew people who knew way more than me in those areas too.

My second point though is that in 800ad the average student had a personal tutor throughout their lifetime up until that age (especially if they were still a student at 18). Oddly enough that isn't true anymore. Give every student access to that now, then try to compare

Fair point. And 5%? Yeah, sure...
