I got PhD funding by the skin of my teeth. I was 8th on a waiting list and everyone before me pulled out / got funded elsewhere. This year people who were further ahead on that list didn’t get funded. Don’t start with that ‘funded students are better’ bullshit, it’s a lottery.

It sucks because in Ireland I was told it was so hard to get funding for the first year, prior to starting. So I applied, got rejected. I can only apply twice, so second time, also rejected. Was continuously rejected for internal funding too.

And all the while my parents dug into loans and I took out a lot of loans to pay for it, hoping to get funding and never getting it. It sucks so bad, and it annoys me beyond belief to see people say that no one should do an unfunded PhD.

by the time I found out I couldn't get any funding at all I was mostly through my PhD. I wasn't going to just stop after all that work as well.
