*chuckles* So the gag is, Beethoven WOULD actually be what we'd consider Black. I've explained this to incredulous non-Black folks before. And...even with receipts, they've literally naysayed me, until I mention that his mother was a drug addict and prostitute.

My hand to the Lord. The convo has gone just like that. For...decades now. ME: Sooo...Beethoven was Black. NON-BLACK PERSON: Preposterous! ME: Nooo...really. NBP: He can't have been BLACK, he was a GENIUS! ME: Well, his mom was a prostitute and addict... NBP: Okay, I see it. ME:pic.twitter.com/Sg8xIbfnvV

I'll just be over here while folks exhaust themselves trying to de-Blackify Beethoven, Nefertiti, St. Nicholas of Myra (yup, St. Nick!), Queen Charlotte, Alex Dumas (both!), Barack Obama's mom, Slash, and Vin Deisel. NOTE: I'll take questions about anyone on this list.

So, Obama is a direct descendant of the first recorded Black chattel slave in America through his mother. "White" is a funny, funny thing.

Fair enough. I have a Black ancestor way back who was considered Black, mixed, and white in various census records. His kids were the same and I think his grandkids were “white”. Definitely complex, I understand.

It helps people who wouldn't normally think about it question Whiteness as a construct. Which they should.
