What one ingredient has to be in a soup before it can be considered a chowder? Potato. That always freaks me out.

Wait. Does this mean potato soup (the blended kind with bacon bits & such in it to imply a loaded baked potato) is actually a chowder & not a soup? What is the difference between chowder & stew then?

No a chowder is a cream or milk based soup. Potato leek doesn't need cream, and even if you put some in, it wouldn't be the base.
