Is this annal entry a later interpolation for propaganda purposes or a true to life copy from an older and possibly contemporary source: the eternal early medievalist struggle.

One of the statements that can apply equally to my Irish and English evidence.

Only difference is that the Irish annals have had way more work done to show how far back certain entries can be considered contemporaneous and early.

Most of the stuff on the ASC is about how the MSS relate to one another and more textual studies on the language rather than analysing certain types of entries or nuggets of info.

I've got two entries to look at here, both massively important, and yet references to them in the scholarship are passing and no one seems to have flagged how important these are?

But one of them is from two later MSS (11th and 12th centuries) that seem to have had access to a set of Northumbrian annals that the earliest MS did not use or did not have access to.

so there is more info for Northumbria from the 8th century in these two MSS, but how much of these entries were altered? I'm not really an annalistic historian and my linguistic knowledge is not really that great. I can read OE but I couldn't tell you if something was early/late.

the first entry in question, which is in all versions, I am pretty sure is genuine because of the way it's written, it's sort of casual and doesn't read like propaganda. The other one is harder to assess.

But it seems that whatever this Northumbrian set of annals from the 8th century was, it formed several entries for two of the MSS and also the 12th c The History of the Kings.

I should check the History of the Kings. Sounds like they just copied the entries from this annal.
