I talk a lot about pet peeves on here but something that has recently come up in some baking groups is for people to just suggest to buy something. Like, already I hated advice like that because you never know someone’s financial/living situation but now even more so.
Again, no one’s fault that this happens (at least not the folks giving advice) I just wish people would stop assuming everything is like North America.

It was a shock when I moved here that I couldn’t just buy everything I needed at one place. I have to go to minimum two these days to get stuff for lockdown purposes. In normal times it’s upwards to 4, 5, or 6 depending on the week.

My local shop doesn’t carry dried pulses for example, and doesn’t restock its spices, or it does very rarely. So I have to go to other shops that are further away to get spices and things like dried lentils.

It can be frustrating but the shops are much smaller. My local shop is maybe the size of two gas stations put together, if I had to approximate the size.

My spouse made a rule on his blog about this - If readers wanted to suggest he buy something that costs more than $10.00, they were welcome to buy it for him, but the constant “Just spend money!” comments were really bumming him out.

Wow that is really good advice. Seriously though, I really need people to stop telling me to buy all this stuff. Break making existed before Dutch ovens, it should be possible to make it without. And yet you’d think that it requires loads of expensive equipment to do right.

We're 50 countries in a trenchcoat and ought to know better as well. When i was living in NYC, my mom asked about grocery stores and that's... not really a thing. Not like she meant. In my neighborhood everything was bodegas, and you did your shopping in small trips. Bulk what?
-
Yeah exactly, for places where everyone is living on top of each other, stores are smaller.
