Conservative Leader @AndrewScheer suggests emergency benefits may prevent workers from returning to work as provinces start to reopen their economies. Claims we now risk labour shortages because of the design of the aid #cdnpoli

Who are these people refusing to work so they can bring home $2000 a month for 4 months? If there’s any data that suggests this is true what does he suggest? No funding for the millions unemployed?

it's the same old tired Conservative nonsense that people would rather not work and receive paltry benefits (which they think are extravagant apparently).

I do know of some people choosing to not be employed, but they are <30 & live at home w/ parents. I don’t believe they represent the majority. There will always be some lazy scammers out there, but right now Scheer’s solutions would punish the masses

Ngl I would even question how “lazy” that scenario is — if this had happened when I was still living with my parents in my 20s I would absolutely have chosen “I’m not working, but I’m the one doing all the errands for my family so my parents aren’t exposed”

They won’t even apply for the volunteer positions because they’re volunteer, not paid more on top of the CERB. I’ve lost a lot of respect for some people in my life

Again: if I was “designated person going out and shopping etc” for my parents, I wouldn’t be taking volunteer positions either, since the goal is to limit their exposure as much as possible and every person I encounter ups the chance I bring the virus home

I’m not saying 100% of the young folks living at home and taking the money rather than running out to potentially earn more are doing this But I’m pretty sure it isn’t 100% of them are too lazy to bother either

Yeah I think painting people under 30 with a broad brush like this is pretty bad. You don't know their situations and tbh, if it was me? I would want to limit my outside exposure. I don't live at home because I live in a different country but if I was back in Canada, I would be.

But many under 30s (like myself) are university students who can only work part-time, or are trying to do university work while under lockdown. My mother works but my dad is vulnerable, I would have to completely not interact with him if I was working and not taking CERB.

And otherwise, so what if they're playing video games all day? This whole situation is so hard mentally and emotionally. If that's how they deal with this then okay. It's not really my business nor Scheer's nor yours.
